A secret government program to discover a way to the singularity has resolved a long time computer conundrum. The Compralcortex started as a machine-learning neural-network with huge covert investments in processing power. The software advanced and refined its own programing to eventually outpace anyone’s ability to understand it, resulting in a major shock to the secrecy culture of the powerful.
Agent Katrina Veach has to help the frantic government understand its own creation.
Over reactions result in new opportunities for recently unemployed technological wunderkinds, Martin Benalli and Calvin Roscoe.
Brice Lathrop is a high school freshman who would rather play Space, the massive-multiplayer computer game, than do anything else. However, the Compralcortex and Brice’s favorite pastime have something in common — a new way for Brice to see the world.

Artificial intelligence threatens to make us all obsolete. Some believe humanity’s only hope is to build a hybrid human and artificial intelligence. The Compralcortex was given the power to rewrite itself in order to incorporate new insights into its own design, while it used an ever increasing understanding of human minds to achieve its goals. Action Glasses: Level Two continues to follow Brice as his augmented reality glasses begin to overlay an ever expanded gamification of the world.
Chaos was caused when the Compralcortex created a new and incomprehensible math, unlocking the polynomial time problem and with it all encryptions. This results in the attempted deletion of the Compralcortex. But the possibilities are too tempting for the powerful, and the true believers won’t stop pursuing their ultimate goal of saving us from ourselves. The story of those caught up in these events weave through the world on collision courses.
We'll make details available once some folks have read the first episode.
The author was born in Delphi, Indiana in 1984, the second oldest of five siblings. He spent a thoroughly pleasant childhood as a camp brat at YMCA summer and family camps.
Derek was home-schooled through 8th grade, attending high school in Ely, Minnesota. After two different colleges and a surf-bum-sabbatical, he ultimately graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Connecticut in 2006.
His first official job was assisting in the refilling of vending machines when he was 13 years old. In the past 20 years Derek has had at least 27 different jobs, 19 distinct residences, and many seasons of travel.
Derek was never fired, but enjoys quitting and finding new challenges. His least favorite job was cleaning up a gory crime scene. His favorite job was as a professional whitewater-kayaker, but he has enjoyed many of his other vocations over the years.
He has lived in cities, suburbs, small towns and wilderness on both coasts, the Midwest plains, the Great North Woods, the Rocky Mountains, and over-seas in residence and transiently. Derek currently resides with his wife Grace and cat Kitniss on the sailing vessel (tentatively named) 'Maria Diem,' which is presently berthed on the East Coast (primarily in the vicinity of New London, Connecticut).
Besides writing, Derek's current endeavor is starting Captineer, where he is mixing his love of sailing and efficiency with innovation. Captineer is attempting to introduce, promote, sail and sell electric auxiliary power systems for sailing yachts.
His prototype sailboat 'Showtime' is a multi-system hybrid vessel. It combines solar, wind and locomotive-current power to make sailing yachts fully energy self-sufficient, with no fuel needed and much less maintenance than a traditional fossil fuel auxiliary propulsion system.
Action Glasses has been a project many years in the making. Some of the underlining ideas started to germinate while Derek was in college. The first pieces were written in 2010, and a whole book was rough drafted in 2013. Some of these parts are still in Level One after many rewrites.
It turns out it takes a village to self publish a book.
